Processing and coming to terms with the loss of a loved one or close friend is a journey that takes time; at times, we may find ourselves grappling with a loss that forever alters our sense of self.
Take, for example, Rod Stewart, the celebrated singer, who recently shared the heartbreaking news of his brother Bob’s passing, mere months after the loss of another brother, Don.
“It’s with heavy hearts that I share the passing of my brother Bob last night, who now joins my brother Don on the celestial football pitch.” “Losing two of my dearest friends within two months is a profound sorrow. Rest in peace, Don and Bob, ‘irreplaceable buddies.’ Sir Rod Stewart.”
In January 2019, Rod attended a party celebrating his sister Mary Cady’s 90th birthday. It was there that he honored both Mary and the now-deceased Don, acknowledging their pivotal roles in his journey to success.
“I can’t emphasize enough how crucial these individuals were in supporting me, guiding me into music, and simply being there for me,” he remarked at the event.
Growing up, Rod had four siblings, but with Bob’s recent passing, only Mary remains. Rod recounted his life story in his autobiography, “Rod: The Autobiography.”
Reflecting on his relationship with his siblings, the Scottish-born star expressed, “These guys have been absolutely incredible throughout my life.”
He reiterated, “I cannot overstate how essential these individuals were in guiding me into music, offering encouragement, and simply being there for me. Whether it was playing football together or helping with everyday tasks like laundry, their presence was invaluable.”
Rod himself has faced health challenges, including a diagnosis of thyroid cancer in 2000. The disease posed a significant threat to the voice that catapulted him to global stardom. Reflecting on that period, Rod recalled, “It was a devastating shock. I remember being plunged into complete silence for several days.”
“No chemotherapy was necessary – thankfully, this meant there was no risk of losing my hair,” he later penned in his autobiography. “And let’s be honest: if we’re ranking threats to my career’s survival, losing my hair would come second only to losing my voice.”
In 2019, the iconic rock star once again stunned his fans by revealing that he had been quietly battling prostate cancer. Rod discovered he had the disease during a routine checkup in February 2016.
“No one knows this, but I think it’s time I shared with everyone,” Stewart announced. “I’m in the clear now because I caught it early. I undergo numerous tests.”
Thankfully, reports indicate that the singer received a clean bill of health the same year.
In addition to disclosing his own journey, he urged others to prioritize their health by getting checked for the fourth most common cancer. “Guys, you really need to visit the doctor. A simple examination can make a world of difference,” he emphasized.
