Before attaining stardom, Tom Selleck undertook minor roles in both films and television series, featured in numerous advertisements, and even made appearances on The Dating Game twice. Reflecting on the experience, he described the game show as humiliating and embarrassing, lamenting, “I lost. Twice. I wasn’t really funny or glib.”
Following his stint on The Dating Game, Selleck secured a spot in 20th Century Fox’s talent program, where he honed his craft for approximately two years before interrupting his career for six months of active military duty. Upon his return, however, he found himself dropped from the program. Nevertheless, this setback failed to deter his determination.
Selleck considers himself fortunate for not landing a significant role until he reached the age of 35. As he recalled to AARP, “When I was 25, I looked 35 but sounded 15. There are a lot of very good actors who make it as younger leading men but don’t graduate — because the audience won’t accept them as grown up.”
The opportunity of Magnum P.I. arrived at a crucial juncture when he contemplated abandoning his pursuit of an acting career. “I think if Magnum hadn’t worked out, I’d never have worked again in this business,” he confided in an interview with Closer Weekly.
Since 2010, Selleck has prominently featured as a co-star in the television series Blue Bloods, portraying Frank Reagan, the commissioner of the New York City Police Department. The show’s enduring popularity is evidenced by its renewal for a 13th season.
