James Earl Carter Jr. was born in Plains, Georgia, on October 1, 1924. His father, James Earl Carter Sr., was a prosperous businessman and land investor, while his mother, Bessie Lilian, worked as a nurse at the Wise Sanitarium, where Carter was born. From 1937 to 1941, Carter attended a local high school. In 1943, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of joining the military by entering the Naval Academy, following in the footsteps of his father, who served in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps during WWI.
In Phil Donahue and Marlo Thomas’ book “What Makes a Marriage Last,” Carter expressed, “I just felt compatible with her.” After graduating from the Naval Academy, he married his wife in 1946. After retiring from the Navy to prioritize his wife, four children, and family business, he constructed a ranch-style house for his family in 1961, as they were in need of a home. According to Zillow, the house is currently valued at $209,996. This residence also served as his home after leaving the White House. “He returned to his roots because he didn’t want to capitalize financially on being in the White House,” as reported by the Washington Post. While many of his predecessors and successors capitalized on their post-presidential popularity, Carter chose a different path. “I don’t see anything wrong with it; I don’t blame other people for doing it,” he said. “It just never had been my ambition to be rich.” Despite facing financial challenges, he ensured a comfortable life for his family, even after selling off the peanut business, by relying on his $217,000 annual pension.
