It’s Been A Rough Few Years For Simon Cowell, And They Changed His Life
Simon Cowell has faced numerous health challenges following two separate bicycle accidents that occurred within a two-year period.
During a recent appearance on the Today Show, Simon and his fellow judges from America’s Got Talent openly discussed these incidents. Hosted by Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel, and Terry Crews, the show shed light on Cowell’s health journey and the impact it has had on his life and career.
The 64-year-old celebrity encountered a similar mishap while cycling in London in early 2022, following a previous fall from his e-bike in Malibu back in 2020.
Simon was questioned about how these setbacks had altered his perspective on life in a promotional piece for the upcoming 18th season of America’s Got Talent. When asked about his physical condition before the accidents, he admitted, “I wasn’t in the best shape prior to the mishaps, so they were far from ideal, rather quite awful.” He hadn’t realized how unfit he truly was until the recovery process began.
Then, he shared, “It was an epiphany, a true ‘aha’ moment!” Simon reflected on his unwavering passion for cycling and remarked that he believed everything unfolded for a purpose.
He declared, “I’m not giving up on my bike,” much to the amusement of his fellow judges. “I can’t get enough of these incredible inventions.”
Following the second incident, Simon was rushed to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken arm and a concussion.
Although the second crash wasn’t as severe as the first, it still resulted in Simon breaking his back and needing to wear a wrist brace for several months. These incidents prompted Simon to make lifestyle changes, particularly for the sake of his nine-year-old son, Eric. Simon’s fiancée, Lauren Silverman, served as a motivating factor.
In an interview with The Sun in April of last year, Simon discussed coping with the aftermath of his e-bike accident.
He revealed, “I was in such a bad place when I fractured my back that I considered going to therapy for the first time in my life.”
“I was miserable because I couldn’t express how I was feeling to Eric. I wondered when I would be able to do things with him again, like playing football and going for walks.”
Eric was born to Simon and Lauren on February 14, 2014. After his bike accidents, the TV personality mentioned that his son had come up with a humorous new nickname for him.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Britain’s Got Talent judge admitted feeling “embarrassed” while watching the episodes at home.
After surgery, Simon’s back is supported by metal rods and screws, but he found solace in the fact that his son drew a comparison between him and the famous superhero Iron Man.
Simon recounted proudly, “When I reunited with my family, Eric said, ‘Dad, you look like Iron Man.’” “Yeah, I’m like Iron Man, indeed,” I grinned.
Since then, Simon has had little trouble laughing off his challenges and has even downplayed the more serious initial injuries he sustained while working on the AGT stage in June 2021.
During a demonstration of a child-friendly Shaolin Kung Fu act, Terry, being the inquisitive one, asked Simon if he could ever envision himself attempting such daring acrobatics.
Simon playfully replied to the pair, “After hurting my back, I considered it a great achievement just to walk around the garden with Eric. But I couldn’t resist doing it without thinking, ‘Maybe not such a great idea!’”
Simon’s journey of resilience and introspection serves as a testament to the unwavering determination that propels him forward.
Despite the challenges posed by the bike accidents, he maintains his enthusiasm for cycling and for life in general, all while finding humor in his misadventures.
