Fans spot worrying detail in new photo of Martha Stewart, 82 – and everyone’s saying the same thing
Martha Stewart is generally regarded as a popular figure, with fans and followers from all corners of the globe. However, she has faced criticism for a recent social media post made during a trip to Greenland, which many are labeling as “tone-deaf.”
The 82-year-old garnered widespread praise earlier this year for her appearance in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue in May. However, her most recent Instagram post has failed to elicit the same level of positivity.
On Tuesday, August 29, Stewart shared a photo from a cruise along the east coast of Greenland. In the picture, the businesswoman and TV personality can be seen enjoying a cocktail, accompanied by the caption:
“End of the first zodiac cruise from @swanhelleniccruises into a very beautiful fjord on the east coast of Greenland. We actually captured a small iceberg for our cocktails tonight.”
Though Stewart likely intended her post to be harmless, it soon drew criticism from followers who felt that her use of a “small iceberg” for her drink was in poor taste.
Soon, Stewart’s comments section was flooded with criticisms regarding her reference to a small iceberg while the “ice caps are melting.”
“Martha, the ice caps are melting, don’t put them in your drink,” one Instagram user admonished.
Another chimed in, stating: “I generally love Martha and the luxuries of her life because it’s about beautiful gardens, homes, and food, but wealthy white people sipping iceberg cocktails while the planet is in crisis is a bit tone-deaf.”
Amidst the discourse, a third commenter quipped, “As the climate warms due to the profits of a few thousand people, billionaires vacation to the melting icebergs, scoop them up, and use them to chill their cocktails. That sounds like a line from a dystopian novel. Can’t make this up lol.”
“Global warming and melting ice caps, yet we need glacier ice for cocktails?! Talk about tone-deaf. I’ve been a fan for years, but seeing lavish indulgences while I struggle to buy groceries is disheartening,” remarked a fourth.
In May, Stewart made history when she confidently posed in daring swimsuits for the cover of Sports Illustrated. The then-81-year-old also shared the rigorous wellness routine she followed beforehand.
“I didn’t starve myself, but I cut out bread and pasta for a couple of months,” Stewart mentioned during an appearance on the Today show.
“I attended Pilates sessions every other day, which was fantastic. I still maintain that routine because it’s so beneficial. Living a clean life with a good diet, regular exercise, and healthy skincare is my norm.”
During her keynote speech at the Las Vegas event, Stewart discussed the response from fans to her “authentic” cover.
“The feedback was truly inspiring because it empowered women of all ages, showing them that if I can do it, they can too,” Stewart noted.
The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue cover featuring Martha Stewart, 81, will hit newsstands on Thursday.
