In an interview with The Guardian released Wednesday, the iconic singer Cher candidly expressed her concerns about the potential outcomes of another Trump presidency. She revealed feeling “horrified” at the prospect and admitted to experiencing significant stress during the previous administration. Cher went as far as saying, “I almost got an ulcer the last time. If he gets in, who knows? This time I will leave [the country].”
Her worries extend beyond personal discomfort, focusing particularly on the future of transgender individuals. Cher highlighted the alarming trend of proposed legislation, noting, “It’s something like 500 bills they’re trying to pass.” Reflecting on her recent interactions with transgender individuals, including her own son, Chaz, Cher emphasized the importance of unity and support within the community, stating, “I was with two trans girls the other night – and of course my own child. I was saying ‘We’ve got to stand together.’ I don’t know what their eventual plan is for trans people.”
Cher’s remarks underscore the broader concerns surrounding social and political issues, highlighting the need for solidarity and advocacy to address challenges facing marginalized communities.
Cher has been a vocal critic of the 45th president, expressing strong condemnation of his actions. In 2016, she referred to him as a “f—ing traitor” on X (formerly known as Twitter), and in a 2018 interview with The Washington Post, she asserted that he had inflicted “so much damage” upon America.
In addition to her political activism, Cher has also addressed geopolitical tensions, particularly those between Armenians and Azerbaijan. Her connection to her Armenian heritage has become increasingly significant over the years, especially after she visited the capital, Yerevan. Reflecting on her trip, she remarked to The Guardian, “When I got there, I thought, ‘Wow, everybody looks like me! How could I not have strong feelings about this?’”
Recently, Cher embarked on a musical project, releasing a 13-track Christmas album. The album features collaborations with friends such as Stevie Wonder and Cyndi Lauper, and includes covers of classics like Chuck Berry’s “Run Rudolph Run” alongside original tracks like the dance-pop single “DJ Play a Christmas Song.”
In discussing the album with PEOPLE, Cher expressed her long-standing desire to create a Christmas album, noting the challenges she faced in conceptualizing it. However, she found inspiration and support from her record company, allowing her to craft a collection of songs that she is proud of. She described the album as eclectic, featuring a mix of joyful and reflective tracks that capture the spirit of the holiday season.
