BARBRA STREISAND SAYS SHE ‘CAN’T LIVE IN THIS COUNTRY’ IF DONALD TRUMP WINS 2024 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
In a passionate continuation from her song “Don’t Lie to Me,” Barbra Streisand once more criticizes former President Donald Trump, referring to him as a “tyrant” and expressing her intent to leave the United States if the Republican front-runner for 2024 secures re-election.
Describing the four-times-indicted Trump as “so stupid” and “ill-informed,” the acclaimed singer and actor recently conveyed to Stephen Colbert, “I cannot continue residing in this country if he assumes the presidency.”
But this isn’t the initial instance she’s issued such a warning, and she isn’t the sole celebrity who reneged on their promise to relocate to Canada, Europe, or even Jupiter following Trump’s victory in 2016.
Barbra Streisand, the esteemed 81-year-old, wasn’t aiming for humor when she remarked, “Yes, Mr. Trump, let’s make America great again. But first, get one thing straight: America was great – before you were elected.”
A long-standing Democratic advocate and fundraiser, she hasn’t held back in expressing her disdain for the former president, labeling him as “the Liar in Chief” and “the Groper in Chief.”
In 2018, the EGOT recipient (holding an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) released her 36th album, “Walls,” inspired by the reality TV star turned President of the United States.
In an interview with the Associated Press regarding her song, she expressed, “I aimed to address the sources of my profound sadness and heartbreak.” Streisand elaborated, expressing her discontent with the current state of affairs: “The assault on our democracy, our institutions, our founders – it’s unbearable. We’re engaged in a battle… We’re fighting for the soul of America.”
Her Grammy-nominated album, a musical critique of Trump’s governance, features tracks such as “Don’t Lie to Me,” inspired by distressing news that left her feeling “ill, hearing falsehoods, encountering utter madness.”
“I abhor deceit, and I believe our nation deserves honesty,” she remarked. With a touch of humor, she remarked, “I find it incomprehensible how he can fabricate so many falsehoods without a shred of remorse (evidently, he’s not Jewish).”
‘Art as a Catalyst for Change’
Reflecting on her political engagement, Streisand delves into the tensions between politicians and artists in her 2023 memoir, “My Name is Barbra.”
“Why does it provoke such ire when artists voice their opinions?” Streisand ponders. “Artists,” she asserts, “can act as a nation’s moral compass.” Their creations offer insight into the zeitgeist and sometimes challenge societal blind spots. They can amplify the voices of the marginalized, speaking out when others remain silent.
“That’s why art poses a threat to tyrants and despots.”
Despite her influential voice, it failed to sway the electorate.
‘World Gone Awry’
In anticipation of the 2016 elections, the star of “The Prince of Tides” lamented on Australia’s 60 Minutes, “He disregards facts. It’s unfathomable. I might just relocate to your country [Australia], if you’d have me, or Canada.”
