Cher Confirms She ‘Will Leave’ the Country if Donald Trump Is Re-Elected

Cher expressed concern about the potential impact of another Trump presidency, admitting in a recent interview that the stress of the previous administration nearly caused her an ulcer.

In an interview with The Guardian published on Wednesday, the “Believe” singer revealed her feelings of horror at the prospect of former President Donald Trump being re-elected.

“I almost got an ulcer the last time,” she shared with the outlet. “If he gets in, who knows? This time I will leave [the country].”

The actress and musician is particularly concerned about the future for transgender people.

“It’s something like 500 bills they’re trying to pass,” she expressed to the publication. “I was with two transgender girls the other night – and of course my own child [Chaz is transgender]. I was saying ‘We’ve got to stand together.’ I don’t know what their eventual plan is for transgender people. I don’t put anything past them.”

Cher has long been a critic of the 45th president, calling him a “f—ing traitor” on X (formerly known as Twitter) in 2016 and stating in a 2018 interview with The Washington Post that he had done “so much damage” to America.

The pop legend, whose birth father was Armenian, also addressed the tensions between Armenians and Azerbaijan in her conversation with The Guardian, a topic she has been actively discussing on social media as well. She developed a strong connection to her heritage after visiting its capital, Yerevan, years ago.

“When I got there, I thought, ‘Wow, everybody looks like me! How could I not have strong feelings about this?’” she shared with the publication.

Cher is gearing up to release her debut holiday album, “Christmas,” on Oct. 20.

The album boasts 13 tracks, featuring collaborations with friends such as Stevie Wonder and Cyndi Lauper. It includes covers of beloved classics like Chuck Berry’s “Run Rudolph Run” and original tracks such as the dance-pop single “DJ Play a Christmas Song.”

“I wanted to make a Cher Christmas album,” the entertainment icon shared with PEOPLE. “but I didn’t know how to do it. I never could figure out a way. Then this year, I just asked the record company if they would just let me do it — and just hand the finished product over to them —and they were agreeable, so I started picking songs.”

She continued, “We did them one at a time, so what I realized is that I have a fun Christmas album that only has a couple of sad songs. I was really happy that it was eclectic, and it’s really eclectic. I was proud of it myself.”
