Toby Keith Dead at 62 Following Stomach Cancer Diagnosis: ‘Passed Peacefully

Country music legend Toby Keith, celebrated for chart-toppers like “Red Solo Cup” and “Should Have Been a Cowboy,” peacefully departed at the age of 62. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), his family revealed that Keith succumbed to stomach cancer, against which he valiantly battled. The statement, issued on Feb. 5, highlighted Keith’s graceful and courageous demeanor throughout his struggle. The family has requested privacy during this period of mourning.

Keith opened up about his battle with cancer during his appearance at the People’s Choice Country Awards in September 2023. Reflecting on his journey, the singer shared with E! News, “It’s like riding a roller coaster. There are good days and moments when you’re up and down.” He added, “It’s a constant shift, but I’m feeling positive today.” Alongside him on the red carpet stood his wife of almost four decades, Tricia Lucus.

In December 2023, Toby Keith staged his inaugural headlining performances since publicly disclosing his battle with cancer at Park MGM in Las Vegas. “Hey everybody! This is Toby Keith. It’s been a while. You know what I’ve been doing — been on the old rollercoaster, but Almighty’s riding shotgun. He’s letting me drive for some reason, but we’re making a big announcement,” shared Keith in a YouTube video unveiling the concerts. “I’m doing a little deal and thought I’d start in the great Las Vegas.”

“It’ll be my first two shows. They’re kind of rehab shows — get the band back in sync, get me rolling again,” he added. “First time in my whole life I’ve been off over two years. I’ve never been off a year in my life.”

“Through COVID and cancer, the old devil’s been after me a little bit,” Keith continued. “I’ve got him by the horns right now, so instead of just sitting around and waiting, we’re gonna get the band back together.”

Throughout his career, Keith has performed for several U.S. presidents, including George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. Additionally, in 2021, he was honored with the National Medal of the Arts by Trump.
